Abstract

Road geometric designs in the hilly terrain of Tomohon City often fail to meet safety standards at sharp curves, increasing the risk of traffic accidents. This study aims to evaluate the geometric conformity of five sharp curves with the 2021 PDGJ standard and redesign the three most critical ones. Using a quantitative descriptive method with field surveys, the analysis revealed that all five curves failed to meet safety requirements, showing extremely small existing radii (5.13 m – 12.01 m) and excessive superelevation . The redesign, using the SpiralCircle-Spiral (S-C-S) method, successfully established safe parameters, including a 35 m design radius, 6% superelevation, and adequate stopping sight distance. It is concluded that urgent geometric improvements are necessary, with recommendations for installing warning signs as a short-term solution and conducting a realignment study for a long-term solution.
