AN ANALYSIS OF ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS UTTERED BY COOPER IN THE MOVIE INTERSTELLAR BY CHRISTOPHER NOLAN

The movie Interstellar (2014), directed by Christopher Nolan, is regarded as one of the best science fiction films of all time with many utterances. Cooper, as the main character uttered so many assertive illocutionary acts as a part of speech act. This study examined the speech acts especially assertive illocutionary acts contained in the movie Interstellar, focusing on how the assertive speech acts contribute to the characters' intentions and the narrative's development. This research employed a qualitative research method based on Cresswell's framework, with analysis steps adapted from Sugiyono (2011) in Ciptaningrum (2017). The data came from the movie Interstellar (2014) which was directed by Christopher Nolan. The data were collected by watching the movie then identifying the assertive illocutionary act uttered by Cooper in the movie. The researcher found 126 occurrences of assertive acts, featuring the statements of fact, speculation, and explanations, providing essential context and information. This categorization highlights the diversity and function of illocutionary acts within the movie Interstellar especially in assertive illocutionary act, revealing the complex ways characters communicate intentions, emotions, and authority. The study suggests that analyzing speech acts in film dialogue can enrich understanding of character interactions and plot dynamics, illustrating the significance of pragmatics in cinematic storytelling.
